After a presence of tremor since October 16, announcing a likely eruption, the Turrialba issued large amounts of ash in the plume October 23, between 11:40 and 12h.
On October 24, around 5:10, the nearest neighbors of the volcano began to perceive a smell that is familiar to them ... The Turrialba issued during a 30 minutes an ash plume that rose to 800 meters above the crater; driven by winds, ash fell in different parts of the Central Valley.
A maintenance inspection visit by teams of Ovsicori on October 18, had helped to identify the remains of ashes heights, the presence of bombs a diameter of 20 cm. on the west crater rim, the destruction of a solar panel due to the fall of centimetric lapilli (which was calculated approximatively the concentration of lapilli : 20 per m² to 250 m SW of the active crater), as well as a recent shift in the active crater.
The preliminary observation of ash shows a significant presence of altered material and 5-10% by volume of fresh material.
