Different legends exist for this volcano : The most familiar is that of the supreme god Kan Laon. A fearsome dragon has appeared on the mountain, and caused havoc on the island. To appease him, the inhabitants offered him in sacrifice a beautiful girl. When the last "girl without blemish" was the daughter of the King, this one offered a reward to anyone who kills the dragon. A prince named Laon, known for its ability to interact with the animals, approached it and killed him. The king gave him the hand of his daughter, and the people called the mountain the name of the prince, Kan Laon, "the one exhales."
