Nyiragongo - 01/03/2016 - Opening of a new vent on the eastern part of the terrace (to the right of the lava lake) - OVG Goma pictures - a click to enlarge.
Since Sunday, February 28, 2016, the Nyiragongo volcano displays an intense activity inside its crater. The Goma Volcano Observatory has sent a team of scientists to investigate the situation.
Preliminary results of these observations are reporting " the appearance of a secondary lava lake " on the eastern part of the crater.
The photos, attached by the Observatory, shows a spatter cone, leaning against the wall of the crater on the first terrace, surrounded by darker recent lava flows. The situation of this secondary activity is in extension of the fracture that connects the Nyiragongo to the Baruta cone.
The Goma observatory indicates a weakening of this eastern part , where the collapse occurred, marked by rumblings perceived by residents near the volcano.
More news as soon as possible.
