La Montagna Grande, wearing maritime pine, Aleppo pines and oaks, was devastated by fire, probably of criminal origin.

Saturday at 18 hours, a fire broke out in the village of Monastero, and in very little time, the flames spread along the north-east ridge of the mountain burning the forest cover. The scorching heat became Saturday, the inability of emergency services to access certain areas, have favored the spread of the fire. The Canadair requested in reinforcements could only intervene Sunday morning to attack the fire on several fronts.

About 600 hectares of woodland have been burned, and power and telephone facilities damaged. Many homes were saved, but the "Black Pearl of the Mediterranean", so named because of its buildings are made of black volcanic stone, will remain marked for years by these fires.

The black stone would never leave on green peaks and the blue sea, everything became ... monochrome black, the color of desolation.

Pantelleria, with the islands of Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione forms the Italian Pelagie archipelago, a group of volcanic islands that owes its existence to the presence of a rift in the center of the Sicilian Channel.

This belvedere in the Mediterranean sea has been inhabited since the Mesolithic. Today, his ranking of Nature Reserve has to catalog and map ancient routes leading to the discovery of this particular environment. The high points are the volcanic cones: besides the Montagna Grande (836 m.), Monte Gibele (700 m.), the Cuddia attalora (560 m.) and Monte Gelkamar (286 m.) have a volcanic activity that goes between 50,000 and 22,000 years. Former, the Green core of Montagna Grande had 600 plant species, including 8 endemic.

The Regional Councillor for Agriculture, indignant, said: Pantelleria is a legacy that will not be abandoned because four rascals have thought good to use fire to achieving impossible goals. After facing the current emergency, we will assess initiatives to restore the island to its green space that was stolen.
