A strong explosion rocked the Santiaguito this May 14, 2016 at 7:21 local, accompanied by a rising ash plume 4,500 meters asl, before moving east-southeast over 40 km.
Pyroclastic flows from the Caliente dome crater traveled the eastern and western flanks of 2,000 meters and have been accompanied by ash falls.
Ash falls were reported on San Felipe Retalhuleu, Pueblo Nuevo, El Nuevo Palmar, Las Marias, Aldea Loma Linda, San Marcos Palajunoj, Finca El Faro, La Florida Patzulin, and various other cited located on the eastern flank of the volcano.

The Conred reported that the explosion of the day was "moderate" compared to previous explosions. She still expelled bombs to a distance of 3 km. There is the largest eruption possibility, similar or stronger than that of 9 May 2014.
