Rhön forme un territoire partagé entre les Bundensländers de Hesse, Thuringe et Bavière, à l’est du massif du Vogelsberg. Il couvre environ 3.500km², avec une forme ovale de 90 km. N-S, sur 50 km E-O.
Rhön form a territory shared between Bundensländers of Hesse, Thuringia and Bavaria, to the east of Vogelsberg. It covers about 3.500km², with an oval shape of 90 km. N-S, 50 km E-O.
This moderately mountainous and heavily eroded massif is however pf typical volcanic appearance. Its name comes from the Celtic "Raino" meaning hilly. It rises 950 meters atop the Wasserkuppe (Hesse), the highest point in Bavaria is located in Kreuzberg, at 927 meters.
Magmas rich in gas produced in Rhön an explosive volcanism, the benefits of which products have been eroded and leave outcrop of basalt and phonolite only in a few places, especially in the south.
