A large part of the lava delta collapsed at Kamokuna on December 31, 2016 at 14:45, propelling blocks into the air and creating a series of large waves that eroded a portion of the old cliff and viewpoint. The corrosive plume is important.
Unwary have nearly left their lives there, having entered over the line marking the forbidden zone. Fortunately, no boats were in the area at the time.
The zone is closed and a temporary flight restriction established. The service rangers confirm the disappearance of the old point of view and the hearing of crunches.
The feeding of lava continuous and the entry of lava into the ocean has resumed.
