After 8 years of superficial calm, the La Cumbre volcano on Fernandina / Galapagos Island began a new eruptive phase on September 4, 2017, around 12:25 (Galapagos time).
The seismic network of the Geophysical Institute in Galapagos began to detect activity in the volcano around 9:55 (Galápagos time).
At 14:28 (Galapagos time), satellite images reported the presence of an eruptive column, original in the volcano, directed westward and northwest at an altitude of about 4000 m above the crater .

The eruption continued this morning from the images of the satellite Goes.
It should be noted that Fernandina Island has no human colonies that could be affected by an eruption. Depending on the direction of the wind, the eruption column should not affect the populations of Puerto Ayora, Pto. Villamil or Pto. Baquerizo, located to the south and south of the volcano.
