The eastern shore of Lake Sevan is surrounded by lower peaks, but is steeper. The shores are narrowing and border the Azerbaijan; the geographical situation and the armed conflict explain the low density of population in these areas of pastures.

At the exit of Sevan, with the Soviet-style, dilapidated and uninteresting architecture, is a hill, which was still an island at the beginning of the 20th century. Becoming a peninsula with the lowering of the level of Lake Sevan, it shelters two modest medieval churches, in black lava stones, vestiges of the Sevanavank monastery.

Sourp Arakelots (Church of the Holy Apostles) and Sourp Asdvazadzine (Church of the Holy Mother of God) were built at the beginning of the Armenian Renaissance, succeeding the Arab domination in 874.
