A strong explosion was observed on August 28, 2019 in Stromboli, at 12:17 local / 10:17 UTC. It was accompanied by a plume rising several thousand meters and visible from neighboring islands.
The explosion hit the center-south zone of the crater terrace. The products of the explosion (bombs, lapilli and ashes) affected the whole terrace and rolled on the Sciara del Fuoco until reaching the sea, forming a pyroclastic flow.
A start of fire is reported on the side of Ginostra.
The activity of the volcano has remained high over the past weeks, justifying the closure of the summit area. It is necessary to wait for more information, to know if appreciable precursors signs were detected.
There is, however, a relatively strong explosion at the north-central crater at 11:55 local time.
The thermal anomaly identified by Mirova at 10:15 am August 28 is very important, with 3,799 MW against 78MW the same day at 0:50.
