Civil Protection communication : Orange Alert for Stromboli Volcano - August 30, 2019

A team from the national department arrived on the island of Stromboli

The Department of Civil Protection has ordered the passage of Stromboli volcano alert from yellow to orange and the activation of the operational phase of "pre-alarm", in accordance with the provisions of the National Emergency Plan for the island of Stromboli.

This decision was taken in the light of the assessments that emerged during today's meeting with the centers of competence, the Department of Civil Protection of the Sicilian region, and received the opinion of the Risk Committee which met today in Rome.

This decision is based on reports of phenomenologies and risk assessments provided by the centers of competence (including the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology for Stromboli (Osservatorio Etneo, Observatory of Vesuvius and Palermo Section), the University of Firenze and the CNR-IREA, and on the basis of this information, it was decided to extend the ban on navigation in the section of the sea in front of the Sciara del Fuoco to two nautical miles km.
The triggering of the alert determines the strengthening of the volcano monitoring system and the information link between the scientific community and the other components and operational structures of the national civil protection service.
National and regional civil protection personnel, in addition to monitoring the technical-scientific activities of the centers of competence, will ensure the connection with the operational structures involved and will guarantee correct information to the population. To this end, local, regional and municipal authorities develop information channels, also in experimental form, capable of reaching and informing the population in case of emergency.

Apart from local volcanic phenomena, which can have frequent variations, a situation of increased volcanic imbalance persists. As a result, the population on the island is urged to keep abreast of and comply with the instructions provided by the local civil protection authorities.

INGV reports that, during the flight over August 30 by the INGV staff and through camera image analysis, it was found that the south-central lava flow had ceased. It started around 01:50 UTC on August 30th. As a result, the lava field gradually calms down.

The flow of SO2 detected by the FLAME network from 09:00 UTC showed a moderate decrease placing the degassing regime at a medium-high level.

The average amplitude of the volcanic tremor over the past few hours has shown a gradual decrease, reaching values comparable to those observed before the explosive sequence described in update release number 32. Currently, the amplitude shows fluctuations around mid-high values.

In Reunion, the Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise, the Volcano City and the Reunion National Park, are pleased to announce the baptismal name of the new volcanic cone, resulting from the eruption of August 11 to 15 2019. This new cone made of two eruptive mouths will be known as "Piton Louise and Henri Cornu", thus paying homage to the first woman to be descended in the crater Dolomieu in 1949.

Familiar with the steps on the volcano since she was 14, she married Henri Cornu, a colonial administrator. The couple will share the passion for the island and its volcanoes, accompanied by guides and porters, including Alfred Picard and Brigadier Jasmin.

The Pas de Bellecombe was renamed "Pas de Bellecombe-Jacob" as part of the "Days of Fire", at the initiative of the Mayor of Sainte-Rose.

The name was given to the site following the expedition to the volcano in 1768, by the Governor, Guillaume Léonard de Bellecombe; The latter, however, had not descended into the enclosure, and it was a member of the expedition, the slave Jacob, who would take the Pas, and the steep cliff. A volcanic cone from the eruption of September 2016 had already been christened Jacob in his honor.
