In less than two months, Stromboli was the scene of two paroxysmal explosions. Similar to that of July 3, 2019, although less strong, it is the short time between these episodes that is unusual ... Stromboli has experienced such explosions separated by several years, or decades, but never in a lapse of so short time.

The August 28, 2019 explosion at 10:17 UTC occurred without any particular changes in the monitored parameter levels before and after the episode, which remained high to very high. Only an increase in SO2 flux (264 t / d) is reported from high to very high values that preceded the paroxysmal event of a few hours.

A strong deformation of the soil was observed and the swelling of the volcano did not begin until five minutes before the explosion.

The MODIS image at around 10.15am (UTC) measured a very high thermal anomaly of 3.799 MW, equivalent to effusive flows of about 15 m3 / s, an order of magnitude higher than the effusive flows recorded from the July 3, 2019 (0.3-3 m3 / s).

The paroxysm generated an eruptive column of 2,000 meters in height and the ejection of large ballistic material up to 200-300 meters from the coast; a pyroclastic flow occurred in the central part of the Sciara del Fuoco and spread over several hundred meters on the surface of the sea, creating a small tsunami; according to the images of the webcams and the weather, its approximate speed was 180 km / h.

The images of the fleeing ship, in front of the advance of the casting at sea, testifies to it ... the passengers, presumably too close and in the forbidden zone, escaped with little to the pyroclastic flow - https://www.facebook.com/cnn/videos/2396453187100571/
