After an exciting afternoon admiring the eruption of the south-eastern crater of Etna until the moment when the INGV website dropped off around 5 p.m. (see yesterday's article: http://www.earth -of-fire.com/2021/02/nouveau-paroxysme-al-etna.html), let's resume the course of this paroxysm, with the comments of the INGV and the photos of Gio Giusa.

The fountaining activity of the SE crater feeds a lava flow along the western wall of the Valle del Bove, where currently the lava front has reached an altitude of around 2000 m s.l.m.

A fall of lapilli, of centimeter dimensions, is reported on Nicolosi and Mascalucia. A fall of ash and lapilli is in progress in Catania.

The Vona went from orange to red at 4:31 Z (before returning to orange level on February 17 at 5:31 Z).

At the same time, another lava overflow is being developed from the SE crater which extends northward towards the Valle del Leone.

The mean amplitude of the volcanic tremor and the infrasonic signals remain on energetically high values.

The deformation data from the GPS network do not show significant changes, while the clinometric network shows contained variations (of the order of microradial) in accordance with the eruptive activity.

From around 17:00 UTC, the end of the lava fountaining phenomenon is observed.

Contextually the emission of lava continues along the valley of Bove, as well as the fallout of ash and lapilli, of modest dimensions until the city of Catania.

The average amplitude of the volcanic tremor and the infrasound activity show a sudden and obvious decrease from 4:50 p.m.

With the stop of the fountains, the lava flows no longer seem nourished, and in their most advanced part, they advance slowly.

More specifically, the main lava flow is heading towards the central part of the Valle del Bove, having traveled a few kilometers. The other small lava flows, which develop in the north and south, are advancing slowly and have reached an altitude of about 2,900 meters.

At the same time, intracratical explosive activity continued unchanged at the Voragine, Bocca Nuova, and Southeast craters.

The mean amplitude of the volcanic tremor continues to show a decreasing trend, reaching values within the mid range.

The infrasonic activity also shows a clearly decreasing trend, with two low values in the rate of occurrence and in the mean amplitude of infrasonic transients.

The distortion data from the GPS network did not show any significant changes, while the contained variations (0.1 - 1 microradians) detected by the clinometric network stopped.

The rest of the volcanic news, obscured by the superb paroxysm of Etna, will follow during the day.
