It is still too early to say whether the Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula is over or not.

The volcano has not, however, emitted new lava since Thursday - roughly six days, the longest pause for the eruption since it began on March 19.
While the crater has gone silent, a red glow is still visible after dark. The light does not appear to be directly connected to the glowing lava, but rather it can be assumed that gas is emerging through cracks. The heat of the gas is so great that it burns, which is visible in the darkness of the night. ... indicating that there is still magma there, said Bryndís Ýr Gísladóttir, a natural hazards specialist at the Met Office, adding that the amount of gas coming out appears to be about the same as before.

Skaftá by Sveinstindur's flow has decreased and now measures around 1,100 m³ / sec compared to yesterday's maximum flow of around 1,500 m³ / sec. The flow rate at the meter for road no. 1 measures 600 m³ / sec and has been unchanged since around midnight.

Experts from the Meteorological Office yesterday carried out a surveillance flight over the flood zone to investigate the effects of the eruption. The runoff distribution near the glacier was found to be smaller than in the 2018 runoff, which is in line with the fact that the maximum discharge is also lower. The effects of runoff near settlements are not yet visible, as the runoff water has not yet flowed back into the channel of the Skaftá River.

During the week from 30.08 to 05.09, the monitoring of the volcanic activity of Etna was carried out by analyzing the images of the network of surveillance cameras of the section INGV Catania, Etneo Observatory (INGV-OE ).

Strombolian activity is observed at the Southeast Crater; a pulsed degassing at the Bocca Nuova crater and an ordinary degassing at the Voragine and Northeast craters is noted.

The amplitude of the volcanic tremor remained mainly at low levels.

 

In more detail: On August 30, starting around 8:30 p.m., a resumption of weak Strombolian activity was observed at the level of the Southeast crater. This activity ended within 24 hours.

The JMA reported that three explosions at Ontake Crater in Suwanosejima produced eruption plumes that rose up to 4.8 km above the crater rim from August 27 to September 3. Large volcanic bombs were ejected 700 m from the crater. The incandescence of the crater was visible at night and ashfall was often reported in the village of Toshima (4 km SSW).

The activity continues.

The alert level remained at 2 and the public was warned to stay 1 km from the crater.
