In Chile, the monitoring stations installed near the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex recorded today, Friday March 4 at 7:28 p.m., an earthquake VT of ML 3.1 at a depth of 2.5 km, associated with the fracturing rocks. The green alert is maintained.

The last eruption, of VEI 5, dates from June 4, 2011 to April 21, 2012 (GVP)

On the morning of March 5, gas vapor release at a height of 1.8 km occurred on the Ebeko volcano, located on the North Kuril island of Paramushir. The plume spread south. In the city of Severo-Kurilsk, the smell of hydrogen sulfide was not felt. There is no threat to the life of the population.

At Erta Ale, in Ethiopian Afar, thermal anomalies have been periodically reported by Mirova since March 2021, when observation conditions allow.

On March 3 and 4, 2022, Mirova reports two thermal anomalies, VRP 7 and 12 MW respectively. They mark the southern pit crater, and remain moderate.

Merapi's volcanic activity is still quite high in the form of effusive eruption activity.
This week from February 25 to March 3, 2022, lava avalanches were observed 73 times to the southwest, dominating the Bebeng River with a maximum slip distance of 2,000 m.
Morphological analysis showed that there were morphological changes in the southwest lava dome as avalanches, but no significant elevation changes were observed. For the central dome, no change was observed.
Based on analysis of aerial photos dated February 20, 2022, the volume of the southwest lava dome is 1,578,000 m³ and the central dome is 3,228,000 m³.

 

Merapi - seismicity and displacement between 25.02 and 03.03.2022

 

The intensity of seismicity this week is still quite high. Mount Merapi's deformation, which was monitored using EDM this week, showed a distance shortening rate of 0.4 cm/day.
The state of the activity is set to the "STANDBY" level. The current potential danger consists of lava avalanches and hot clouds in the south-southwest sector covering the Boyong river for a maximum of 5 km, the Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng river for a maximum of 7 km. The southeastern sector covers the Woro River for a maximum of 3 km and the Gendol River for a maximum of 5 km. Meanwhile, the ejection of volcanic material in the event of an explosive eruption can reach a radius of 3 km from the summit.
